The Leading Hand is a complete workshop management system. It is developed by AMPL Software, with the continuing input of the Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers - and workshop owners just like you.

- Details: Store vehicle and plant details including rego, make, VIN, colour, engine no/model. Maintenance items (eg, timing belts) can be stored along with service intervals. A warning will appear during invoicing when the service on the item is due. After invoicing, the next service point can be recorded.
- History: Quick to find and easy to see. Listed in date order (most recent first) in short form with the click of a button for long form. Or, select a period when you think the job may have been done. You can also display full customer history. Easy!
- Change owners or plates: Simple to change without confusing your accounts or service history.
- Reports: Get lists of vehicles and owners, or send letters and emails by vehicle make, model, etc. Service history reports, service and rego due with in the next fourteen days.
- Vehicle Specs: Interface to the Autodata service
data, specs, diagrams etc for thousands of vehicles. (sold separately).

- Types: Individual and corporate with appropriate contact details. Active and inactive customers are also supported.
Note if a customer requires an order number for invoicing.
- Contact details: Information on-screen includes contact details and money owing to you, with vehicles and histories just a click away.
- Levels: Up to 5 customer pricing levels supported. You can automatically have different price structures for different customers.
- Letters: Send reminder and thank you letters. Send a letter to a single customer or a group of customers. These can also be emailed.
- Phone and SMS: The Leading Hand enables you to directly phone or SMS a customer from within the program. You can also send bulk SMS messages.
- Selection: A sorting field enables you to select customers based on a particular property. You can also select Active and Inactive customers.
- Reports: See who owes what and for how long, what vehicles a customer has and who your customers are.

- Keep in touch with your customers: Make up standard letters with different fonts, bold, italics and colour for maximum effect. A spelling checker is also included.
- Print with customer details automatically in the right place.
- Send a letter to one customer, a selection of customers (eg, service due in the next month) or all customers.
- Plain Stationery: Save on printing costs. Your workshop details will appear in the top centre. Or, you can use pre-printed stationery.
- Emails: Send individualised emails to your customers. You can send notices such as reminders for service due, or rego check.
- Mail Merge: Full purchase users can create mail merge files for MS-Word. A great tool for power users.
- SMS: Communicate to your customers by SMS.

- Barcode Support: Use a barcode reader to read product barcodes. Print barcode labels on standard label stationery.

- Allows progressive entering of details on long jobs.
- Quick Invoices: Store an invoice as a template for future invoices. Create a new invoice with just a few mouse clicks. Use an old invoice to create a new invoice. Great for correcting mistakes on that long invoice that just got printed!
- Purchased Items: Keep extra information such as serial number, supplier, purchase price etc. on purchased (non stock) items used in invoices. Useful for tracing manufacturer's warranty on high value one-off items.
- Labour: Keep track of time billed for each mechanic in the workshop. Built-in labour timer keeps track of the time spent on a job.
- Invoices: Invoice the plant/vehicle to a different customer. Useful for warranty work.
- Chase Debtors: See the list of who owes what, with names and phone number.
- Full GST Support: A comprehensive set of reports allows you to calculate your BAS statement with a minimum of fuss.
- Reports: Full overview of money billed and receipted. Extract details electronically (in text format) for your accountant. Also Ageing, bank deposit reports, invoice listing, outstanding invoices, labour summary, service activity and Statements are available.
- MYOB / QuickBooks Cashbook Interface (purchased separately): This option allows you to harness the full power of MYOB or QuickBooks with the Leading Hand. The interface will allow you to set-up for BAS by cash or accruals. Get the best of both worlds! (Please note: this option does not include MYOB, QuickBooks or Quicken Cashbook. Nor does it include support for these programs.)
- A multi-user version of The Leading Hand is available. This is based on a powerful client/server SQL database engine. To cut a long story short, this means that you will have a totally reliable, fast and state of the art system. Yes, it does cost more, but you can expect far less downtime with your multi-user Leading Hand than you would with other multi-user workshop management systems. And as you know, time is money!
